Facts: Flash Flood

1.) Flash flooding remains the deadliest severe weather in the U.S., killing more people per year than hurricanes, tornadoes and lightning. (They are still finding and counting bodies in the Texas Hill Country flash flood. At least 120 that are dead and dozens more are still missing.)

2.) The main reason for flash flooding is heavy rainfall, usually over a long period over a dry land area. Next, the conditions of soil, ground cover and topography also factors into flooding. When water exceeds the ability of the ground to absorb it, flash flooding occurs. (Also, receiving 4 months of rain in 45 minutes will do it. My heart and prayers go out to my fellow Texans who have been through this hell.)

Today I finished the latest book in the Baru Cormorant series (fourth book remains to-be-released), The Tyrant Baru Cormorant. Y'all, Baru is so back.

! Spoilers for books 1 & 2 below !

If you've looked at other reviews for the series, you may have seen book 2, The Monster Baru Cormorant, referred to as the series' "sophomore slump." I disagree, but I understand where the feeling comes from. The Monster feels like a prelude, a setting of the board, for The Tyrant. The Monster puts all the pieces in place for the cascade of schemes and plays that come in The Tyrant. They almost feel like one book split into two (which is fair—taken together, they represent about a thousand pages and would make for one mammoth novel).

If you felt like Baru was too passive in The Monster and that there wasn't enough scheming going on, I can happily report those things are wholly rectified in The Tyrant. Having located the infamous and quasi-mythological Cancrioth at the end of The Monster, Baru wastes no time in whipping into full savant plotting mode.

Somehow the heat has returned

As you can guess from the title, the heat has resumed. Which… ugh. I am not liking it one bit. Just yesterday the same issues returned (tiredness, achy eyes, sadness creeping in) which ugh. I’m not a fan of and I want it to go away.

However today the Lego U-Wing did arrive so I spent the morning doing that. It was a nice distraction, as Lego often is and when built it does look nice. The wings fold back nicely (which obviously is the main thing it should do) and the lil windows in the doors are actual windows. The downside is the cargo hold is a bit cramped and there’s no way of keeping K-2 in place so he does rattle around. But otherwise it’s pretty good (though it is funny it includes Dedra who gets nowhere near it).

Yesterday I started Clown In A Cornfield and I’ve read the prologue and two chapters (I’d have read more but heat). The prologue is obviously different than the film’s one. I did like the films one (albeit not liking that it was so far in advance of the story) but I think it’s good to have actually seen what happened to Cole’s sister (as opposed to being told it). I wonder if there was a reason that they didn’t show it (though I’d understand why it does sound like it’d be a health and safety nightmare).

I did got back on Still Wakes The Deep the other night and, sure enough, a monster did appear albeit only one this time. I did finish the dlc and it was pretty good but of course it was sad at the same time.

The other week mum ordered shoes from the Clark’s sale and, of course, they fit neither of us. (I was against getting them without trying them but she’s been badgering me about new ones for months.) so part of tomorrows trip is taking them back in store. But, of course she finds new shoes already and I’ve had to do them (from Amazon's prime sale and from tk maxx) and I’m not a fan of having to do that. I’d rather just get some in store cause then I could at least try them before buying but ugh. I’ve told her if these don’t fit it’s not gonna be discussed again and, thankfully, she agreed.

Tomorrow is gonna be a busy day going to take the aforementioned shoes back, checking in b and m (there’s a Lego flamingo cheap and also I saw there’s daleks for £1??) and a few other plays before seeing Jurassic World.

But part of me is thinking about getting that pass for the other cinema. Sure it’s a train ride away but the train is cheaper than the bus and it would mean I could do weekday showings instead of hoping for afternoon weekend ones. I’m trying to weigh the pros and cons of the whole thing to decide. Maybe if I could double up on films each time I go (to save travel expenses) that would make it better easier but I dunno.

I guess it would mean I’d see more films (both cause I’d have more options and be more willing to see things I wouldn’t normally). Plus there is a mystery film there at the start of next month and I’m really curious what it could be (the only hint is it’s a horror film)

Has anyone had cinema passes before? Is it a thing that you’ve found worth doing?

Anyway I dunno what I’m gonna do the rest of the night. I guess it depends on how melty my brain gets.

But oh I did sort out uni yesterday finally. It’s still annoying my options were only 30 point things but whatever.

A Brace of Hobbits

I'm heading off to a convention in London in the middle of August.  It's called For the Love of Fantasy, and it's one of those multi-fandom affairs, and for once I'm not actually going for the Supernatural guests,  It's not that I don't love seeing them, but just once I thought I'd have a bit of variety, so I'm having a Lord of the Rings weekend.

I'm going to get up close and personal with four hobbits and Gandalf!

So, I've been cracking on with some artwork for hobbit autos, and so far I have a brace of hobbits - otherwise known and Samwise Gamgee and Mister Frodo !

Noms Close in Two Days

(Link to tagset for convenience)

No further queries at this time. Nominations will close Sunday, July 13th at 9:59PM Eastern Time. What time is that for me?

If your nomination was rejected, it was because it was not disambiguated (aka putting the fandom name in parentheses after the ship). The correct format is Relationship!Character/Relationship!Character (Fandom). The disambiguation just needs to be clear enough to us so that we can associate your ship with a fandom in the back end.

For example: Adopted Sibling!Aerith Gainsborough/Adopted Sibling!Sephiroth (Compilation of Final Fantasy VII) would be acceptable, as would disambiguating with (Comp of Final Fantasy 7) (CoFFVII) (CoFF7), etcetera. A full explanation of formatting rules, such as abbreviations for relationships to save on characters, can be found here.

Please disambiguate. If you nominated a ship in one of the following fandoms, it may have been rejected. Please double-check that it was formatted correctly, and then resubmit if it wasn't. If you believe we made an error, please drop us a line.
